1880 Town, Mile 171 on I-90 in South Dakota

Just off the Interstate in South Dakota, 1880 Town is a bizarre little tourist attraction that is really worth a stop. It has an interesting little town set up as it might have been in 1880. The kids really enjoyed this place and it somehow captures the imagination. We arrived at 7:45pm and it was closing at 9pm so we did not have much time to see everything this place has to offer.

One of the unique attractions of 1880 Town is its large collection of memorabilia and props from the movie "Dances with Wolves". The actual horse that Kevin Costner rode on (Cisco - real name is Buck) is there for viewing also.

We first saw this attraction as we passed by four summers ago with Uncle Jim. On the same property there is an enormous T. Rex dinosaur sculpture on a leash with a human skeleton leading the beast along. On that trip we turned around at the next exit and actually drove back to get a photograph of the sculpture in the sunset. The sculpture has nothing to do with 1880 Town but is on the same property. Unfortunately you can't walk very close to it and, in fact, the best view of it is from the highway! By the way, the name of the dinosaur is Lulu.

I love this photo! At the last second, the camel looked at the camera and struck the perfect pose. It really looks like he's smiling.

This eclectic collection of attractions was really fascinating in a quirky, South Dakota way, whatever that means. Next time we're passing through, I will be hard pressed not to stop and check it out again.

I had totally forgotten that the dinosaur was associated with anything called 1880 town. Cool!
