Our second humble abode, the Four Seasons Manele Bay, on the island of Lanai. We took a ferry boat ride from Lahaina, Maui to Lanai for the latter part of our 9-day trip.

Private whale-watching trip (no one else signed up) was a bust. We saw no whales but had a fun time on the ocean anyway. Apparently, the humpbacks were starting to head out to the deep ocean for their trip to Alaska. We saw many whales from land but none very close up. Oh well. We were able to see parts of Lanai that were very remote and the cliffs were spectacular on this west side of the island.

One of the other main things visitors to Lanai do is four wheeling. Many roads on Lanai are not paved and to see much of the island you need to have a Jeep-like vehicle. This was also a lot of fun as we were able to see remote beaches on the north end of the island and very few people.

One of the well-known spots to visit on the drive through the dry, remote part of the island is called the Garden of the Gods. It was a magical place. I felt like I was in southern Utah. This photo does not do it justice but it was a bizarre other-worldly place.

Driving the Jeep turned out to be a lot of fun for me. It seemed to be in its element with the dirt roads and rocky terrain. This is our Jeep in the Garden of the Gods.
