Mammoth Hot Springs and Gardiner's Pronghorn Antelope

Frosty Trees at Mammoth Hot Springs

In the afternoon, we visited some of the geothermal features at Mammoth Hot Springs near the northwestern corner of the park. This is a nice place to visit in the winter since the cold air causes more steam to rise from these hot spots.

During the winter months, pronghorn antelope congregate in the lowlands near Gardiner, Montana. After exiting the park through the Roosevelt Arch, we drove slowly along a dirt road on the outskirts of the town. We visited this area this summer and saw quite a few pronghorns then too. Now, the herd is larger as the pronghorns from Lamar Valley have joined up with some of the antelope that stay here all year.

The lighting was terrific as we saw dozens of these beautiful creatures very near the road.
