A Day of Moonlight...

...Basin that is.

Today was a strange day weatherwise. We intended to ski at Big Sky today but, upon arrival at the base area, people were leaving en masse, hopping on the shuttle to go back to the parking lot. We immediately suspected high winds and that was the case. Ramcharger and Swiftcurrent lifts were closed along with most of the rest of the mountain! Hmmm. What to do? We decided to try out Moonlight Basin today and it was a good call. The Six Shooter and Lone Tree lifts were open and even the high Headwaters lift opened later in the morning.

Very few people were here today and that's always one of the nice things about Moonlight. We found some good snow here and there but the weather was just plain bizarre. One minute it would be snowing pellets, the next it would stop and blue sky would appear. Less than an inch fell throughout the day but the winds filled in some pockets nicely.

Jim and I showed a nice steep chute to Colin and Chelsea and the handled it nicely. It was quite steep and narrow in spots. The photo below does not do it justice.

I was loving life in these steep chutes...

The highlight of the day was when Jim and I got in one run on the Headwaters lift and traversed over to Cold Spring chute. The snow was fantastic and the steepness is superb. I managed to ski it non-stop. Not that I intended to but I just couldn't stop it was so sweet and my lungs were obliging.

Jim and I felt we had earned a celebratory beverage at the Moonlight Lodge. We enjoyed a cold/hot one at the bar and found a comfy chair to reflect on that spectacular Headwaters run. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....
