Obama for President
Last night, Laurie and I attended a Reception for Senator Barack Obama at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Chicago. The CEO of Allscripts, Glen Tullman, is involved with fundraising for the Obama campaign and, in general, is very "connected" to the Democratic party. It's strange for me to have access to these types of people through Laurie but we both feel the desire to take advantage of these opportunities. When else might we be able to meet the potential future President of the United States?
With Glen's tip about where Barack might enter the Reception hall, Laurie and I slid off to that side of the room. Sure enough, Senator Obama entered the room about 50 feet from us and I think Laurie and I were two of the first 10 people (or so) to shake his hand and greet him before he headed to the podium. It really was a moment I will never forget as he had the perfect handshake, looked me straight in the eye with a big smile and said, "Nice to see you." I think I mumbled something like "it's nice to meet you" but I'm really not sure what came out of my mouth. It wasn't poignant, I'm quite sure of that!
There is no question that you can get swept up in the man's charisma and charm. He has that twinkle in his eye that is undeniable.

But then, it was not Senator Obama who impressed us first with his words. It was his wife! Michelle Obama spoke strongly and eloquently about her husband. Most impressive was her explanation of why she "signed on" for his mission to run for President. Let there be no doubt that this is a very strong, intelligent woman with a passion seemingly equal to his to make things better.
So, with that, I was eager to get a photograph of Laurie, another strong and intelligent woman with passion for a cause, with the potential future First Lady. It was the chance of a lifetime and here it is...
I have a feeling that this is nearly the last time just anyone will be allowed to get close to them. Barack is very popular and he really was greeted like a "rock star" after his speech. He had body guards and security but it really seemed inadequate. I think meeting him so up close and personal was allowed at this Reception because many of the people here knew him and were long-time supporters. BUT, that said, it was not difficult to get in the door and meet him. In this photo, you can see the swarm around him after he spoke.

It will be interesting to see how he does over the next few months and 1+ years. It's such a long road ahead. He and his family will be tested mightily but, after hearing he and his wife speak, and learning more about his message and ideas, I really believe he has what it takes to win over this country. His optimism and level-headed thinking is such a breath of fresh air. He has renewed my hope in the future of this country and I truly believe his message will appeal to a large cross-section of America. If only people really LISTEN to what he is saying. He has the ability to work with people of differing opinions and not let every issue become a partisan battle.
Like I said, it was a night Laurie and I will never forget. But I really hope that we can fully celebrate in 2008.

That is wonderful that you got to meet the next President and First Lady. With the decision to plunge even deeper into the Iraq morass, Shrub has upped the probabilities considerably that the American people will rally around a sensible leader in 2008. I wish him well.
