March 17 - Megeve

On Sunday night, we arrived in Megeve in the early evening.  After checking into our nice but small suite, we headed into the classic old French village well known for its charm.  The hotel recommended a restaurant serving good local cuisine and we proceeded to have a very good meal.  Jeff and I shared a fondue with cheese and mushrooms (cepes) that was incredibly good.

After dinner, we strolled around the really charming old town of Megeve.  It was quiet this evening but I can imagine how beautiful it would be with snow falling during the holidays.  We managed to find the energy for a nightcap at a semi-busy local tavern but by the end of the evening we were all very ready to get to bed after a very loooooooooong day.

The next morning we checked out of the hotel and drove to the Mt. D'Arbois base of the ski area.  Once again it was a bluebird day with shocking views of Mont Blanc:

This is a well known ridge run in the Alps known for its spectacular view of Mont Blanc the entire way down.  The view of Mont Blanc above was in our face all the way down the ridge trail you see in the photo below.  It was admittedly a bit hard to concentrate on my turns and decided I'd better stop to take a few photos.

I believe this was taken from the Mont Joly chairlift looking toward the Cote 2000 area:

At the end of the morning, we took the Rocharbois lift to get to the Rochebrune side of the large Megeve ski area.  After a couple more delicious corn runs, we happened upon this little slice of heaven and what was to be the first of many leisurely lunches in the mountains.  This is L'Alpette Restaurant with views of Mont Blanc from our table.  Not too shabby.

This is what the on-mountain restaurant looked like:

We sat on the balcony just under the restaurant sign.  Here are Tom and Jeff at our table.  Note the bottle of rose on the table, also the first of many on this trip!

Here are a few photos taken that afternoon at Megeve:

All in all, it was a great day on the slopes and we were fairly impressed with Megeve.  It was a worthwhile stop on the way toward Val d'Isere and Tignes.
