August 2 - Leaving Red Rock Lakes NWR

Spectacular Sunrise at Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge

I will forever associate this wildlife refuge with spectacular clouds. We woke to a mesmerizing sky above us. We hadn't been out of the tent for a minute and Colin and I were scrambling for our cameras. The fact that we were nearly the only people here just made it more magical.

More Nice Cloudscapes

We packed up the campsite, loaded up the car, and headed west to try to find some breakfast in Idaho. There were 40 + miles of gravel in front of us before we'd reach Interstate 15. The drive out of the refuge was slow due to the road, the clouds, and constant raptor sightings. I'm very glad I decided to visit this special place. I can only imagine what it's like during the trumpeter swan migration.

But we must move on. Our stomachs were grumbling and Sun Valley was calling. But first I planned to stop at Craters of the Moon National Monument for a few hours for a special adventure.
